Wyoming Low-Voltage Alarm Technician License: Requirements and How to Qualify

Wyoming licenses low-voltage technicians through the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety (DFPES), which is also the State Fire Marshal. There are several low-voltage categories, and alarm is one of them. Each category has its own ICC exam; for alarm it is ICC 235.

Who needs the license

You need it to install, wire, energize or service alarm systems in Wyoming. Testing alone does not require it.

While testing alone doesn't require this license, we highly recommend NICET certification in Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems. Our NICET ITM Fire Alarm prep covers it.

How NICET certification fits in

DFPES staff told us by phone how NICET Fire Alarm certification affects the path to this license:

Your NICET Fire Alarm levelWhat the Department told us
Level I or IIQualifies you to sit the ICC 235 exam
Level III or IVEssentially stands in for the other requirements
NoneYou go through the full process

This is what the Department told us, not a published rule. Confirm your own path with DFPES before you apply. Our NICET Fire Alarm prep covers the NICET route.

The exam

ICC gives the Wyoming Low-Voltage Alarm Technician exam (235) at Pearson VUE test centers for $115:

The outline has six areas of about five questions each, covering Class 1, 2 and 3 circuits and fire alarm circuits. What is on the exam breaks it down, and exam day covers the logistics.

Getting ready

Wyoming and ICC do not publish exam pass rates. Try our free 10-question practice test on the 2023 NEC, or see the full Wyoming Low-Voltage Alarm Technician exam prep.
