What's on the Wyoming Low-Voltage Alarm Technician Exam?
The Wyoming Low-Voltage Alarm Technician exam (235) is 30 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, open book with the 2023 NEC, and you need 70%. ICC's outline splits it into six areas of equal weight.
The outline
| Area | Share of exam | About this many of 30 |
|---|---|---|
| General Remote-Control, Signaling, and Power-Limited Alarm Systems | 16–17% | 5 |
| Installation of Class 1 Circuits | 16–17% | 5 |
| Installation of Class 2 and 3 Circuits | 16–17% | 5 |
| General Fire Alarm Systems | 16–17% | 5 |
| Non-Power-Limited Fire Alarm Circuits | 16–17% | 5 |
| Power-Limited Fire Alarm Circuits | 16–17% | 5 |
ICC publishes percentages, not question counts, so the counts are rounded.
Where the weight is
- No area dominates. Each is about five questions, so a weak area costs as much as any other.
- Half the exam is remote-control and signaling circuits: the general rules, Class 1, and Class 2 and 3.
- The other half is fire alarm: general rules, non-power-limited circuits and power-limited circuits.
Where each area lives in the 2023 NEC
| Area | 2023 NEC |
|---|---|
| General rules and power-limited cables | Article 722 |
| Class 1 circuits | Article 724 |
| Class 2 and 3 circuits | Article 725 |
| General fire alarm | Article 760, Part I |
| Non-power-limited fire alarm circuits | Article 760, Part II |
| Power-limited fire alarm circuits | Article 760, Part III |
On the 2023 NEC
The 2023 NEC split old Article 725 into Articles 722, 724 and 725. In the 2020 and earlier editions, Class 1, 2 and 3 were all in Article 725, so study material written for them sends you to the wrong article:
| Topic | 2020 NEC and earlier | 2023 NEC (your exam) |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1 remote-control, signaling and power-limited circuits | Article 725, Part II | Article 724 |
| Class 2 and Class 3 circuits | Article 725, Part III | Article 725 |
| Cables for power-limited circuits (listing, marking, installation) | Article 725, Part IV | Article 722 |
A study plan built on the weights
- Learn the 2023 layout first. If your notes or older books cite Article 725 for Class 1 circuits or for cables, update them to the table above.
- Work Articles 722, 724 and 725 together. That is about 15 of the 30 questions.
- Then Article 760, part by part. General, non-power-limited and power-limited, about 15 more.
- Know where things are in your books. The exam is open book, so it rewards finding a section quickly as much as knowing it. Ugly's Electrical Reference, Ferm's Fast Finder Index, Tom Henry's Key Word Index and the NEC Handbook are also allowed.
- Sit a timed, full-length exam. 30 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes is 3 minutes each.
