Utah Master Electrician License: Requirements and the Exam
Utah licenses master electricians through the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL), under the Electricians Licensing Act Rule (Utah Admin. Code R156-55b). There are two master licenses, Master Electrician and Residential Master Electrician, and since August 1, 2025 they share one written exam: the Master Electrician Law and Rule exam, given by Prov.
Master Electrician: three paths
| Path | Education | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| A | Bachelor's or master's in electrical engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited program | 2,000 hours as a licensed apprentice |
| B | Associate of applied science from an approved electrical trade program | 4,000 hours as a licensed journeyman |
| C | None | 8,000 hours as a licensed journeyman |
Residential Master Electrician: two paths
| Path | Education | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| A | None | 4,000 hours as a licensed residential journeyman |
| B | Bachelor's or master's in electrical engineering (EAC/ABET) | 2,000 hours as a licensed apprentice |
For both master licenses, you sit the exam after completing the licensure requirements, not partway through them.
The exam
The old master code and theory exams were dropped on August 1, 2025. Utah's rule (R156-55b-302b) now says a master or residential master applicant "shall pass the Utah Master Electrician Law and Rule Exam with a score of at least 75%".
| Item | Master Electrician Law and Rule exam |
|---|---|
| Vendor | Prov |
| Questions | 80 |
| Time | 240 minutes (4 hours) |
| Passing score | 75% |
| Code editions | 2023 NEC, NFPA 70E 2024 |
| Retake | After 30 days |
Despite the name, it is not only law. About 33 of the 80 questions are NEC and theory, 5 are NFPA 70E, 4 are Utah's NEC amendments, and the rest are Utah licensing law and labor and safety rules. What is on the exam has all 21 areas.
Prov's bulletin sets the combined written exam fee at $85 but does not state the Law and Rule exam fee separately. Confirm it when you schedule.
The practical
DOPL and the Prov bulletin also require the practical: the Utah Electrician Practical for master and the Utah Residential Electrician Practical for residential master. It is waived if you already passed it for your journeyman license. (The current rule text lists only the Law and Rule exam for masters, but DOPL's pages and the bulletin both say the practical applies.)
Pass rates
DOPL and Prov do not publish current pass rates. The exam in its current form dates only from August 1, 2025.
Renewal and continuing education
Licenses run on a two-year cycle. Each term needs 16 hours of CE:
- At least 12 hours core: 8 hours on the NEC and 4 hours on NFPA 70E.
- The other 4 hours core or professional: OSHA/MSHA, motors and motor controls, tool use, or supervision.
Reciprocity
Utah grants licensure by endorsement under Utah Code 58-1-302 (R156-55b-305). You submit a Verification of Licensure from your home state's licensing agency. If your state has no equivalent license, you have to meet Utah's requirements, including the exam.
Dated changes to know about
- January 1, 2027: Title 58, Chapter 55 is reorganized, with electrician qualifications moving to 58-55-303 and CE to 58-55-304 in a new Part 3. Several exam areas test this chapter, so check which numbering is in force on your test date.
- July 1, 2027: Utah's amendment allowing single-pole breakers with handle ties as a service disconnect (230.71(B), under Utah Code 15A-3-601) sunsets.
