One exam, 80 questions
You need 75% overall. Only 33 of the 80 questions are on the NEC and electrical theory; the other 47 cover licensing law and rules (29), Utah labor and safety rules (9), NFPA 70E (5) and the Utah NEC amendments (4). Our full-length practice exam draws from every area in the same proportions.

On the 2023 NEC
All three Utah written exams list the 2023 NEC, the edition Utah adopts. You may bring an older edition, but study material written for the 2020 edition numbers these rules differently. Every question here cites the 2023 section.

Frequently asked questions
How is the Utah Master Electrician exam structured?+
One Prov exam of 80 questions in 4 hours, open book, and you need 75%. It is the Master Electrician Law and Rule exam, and Residential Master Electrician applicants take the same exam. Since August 1, 2025 it has replaced the separate master code and theory exams, but it still carries NEC and theory areas alongside licensing law, labor and safety rules, NFPA 70E and the Utah NEC amendments.
Which code edition is the exam on?+
The 2023 NEC, the edition Utah adopts. No move to the 2026 NEC has been announced: the version of the code-adoption statute that takes effect January 1, 2027 still names the 2023 edition.
Is it open book? What can I bring?+
Yes. The references are the 2023 NEC, Ugly's Electrical References (2023) and the Utah licensing laws and rules; the master exam adds NFPA 70E (2024) and Utah Labor Commission and OSHA rules. You may bring the current or an older edition of the code. Permanent tabs, highlighting and underlining are allowed. Post-its, repositionable tabs, handwritten notes, formula sheets and add-on indexes are not, and you cannot mark your books during the test. The only calculator allowed is Prov's on-screen one.
Who gives the exam, and what if I fail?+
Prov, at its test centers in Layton, Provo, Sandy and St. George, or remotely through Examroom. The bulletin lists an $85 fee for each combined theory and code exam; it does not state the master law and rule exam's fee separately. You need 75%, and results are given on site. If you fail, you wait 30 days to retest; after six failed attempts, you wait 120 days before each later attempt.
Is there a practical exam?+
Yes. Journeyman candidates take the Utah Electrician Practical (6 tasks in 130 minutes), and residential candidates take the Residential Electrician Practical (4 tasks in 95 minutes). Master and residential master candidates take the practical too unless they already passed it for a journeyman license. No books are allowed at the practical.
How often do I renew?+
Every two years. You need 16 hours of continuing education per term, at least 12 of them core: 8 hours on the NEC and 4 on NFPA 70E.
Can I use a license from another state?+
Utah licenses by endorsement. DOPL publishes which other states' licenses it accepts for each license type; if your state has no equivalent license, you must meet Utah's requirements.
What are the Utah NEC amendments?+
Utah Code 15A-3-601 amends the NEC statewide, and the master exam gives them 4 questions. Among other changes, Utah deletes 210.12 (AFCI protection), 230.67 (service surge protection) and the outdoor-outlet GFCI rule in 210.8(F); rewrites 230.71 to allow up to six service disconnects, with the handle-tie allowance in 230.71(B) ending July 1, 2027; and requires the authority having jurisdiction to conduct or witness a test of emergency systems (700.3(A)). Residential installations within the scope of the IRC follow its electrical provisions.
What do I need before I can sit the exam?+
For a master license: 8,000 hours as a licensed journeyman; an associate degree from an approved electrical trade program plus 4,000 hours as a licensed journeyman; or an ABET-accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering plus 2,000 hours as a licensed apprentice. For a residential master license: 4,000 hours as a licensed residential journeyman, or the electrical engineering degree route.
