Utah Master Electrician Exam Day: What to Expect

Prov gives the Master Electrician Law and Rule exam for DOPL. It is the written exam for both the master and the residential master license. Here is what the day looks like.

Where you test

Prov's fixed sites are in Layton, Provo, Sandy and St. George, and the written exam can also be taken remotely through Prov's Examroom, proctored by webcam.

Scheduling

On Prov's scheduler (scheduler.provexam.com), choose "UT Electrical" and then Master or Residential Master as the license, entering your details exactly as they appear on your ID. Pick a date and venue and pay by card, or schedule by phone at (801) 733-4455. The school-approval step Prov added in 2026 applies to journeyman candidates.

Cancel or reschedule at least 3 business days ahead, or the fee is forfeited. A no-show forfeits it too. Prov's bulletin does not list the Law and Rule exam fee separately from the $85 combined-exam fee, so confirm the amount at checkout.

What to bring

A current government-issued photo ID whose name matches your registration exactly. A temporary paper Utah license is accepted only with the expired original.

Open book, with rules

The reference list for this exam is longer than the journeyman one: the 2023 NEC, NFPA 70E 2024, Ugly's Electrical References (2023), Utah's NEC amendments (15A-3-601), the Utah licensing statutes and rules, two Labor Commission rules and the OSHA PPE standards (29 CFR 1910.132 to .134). Prov's bulletin says reference books may be used, and permits both the current and the previous edition of the code book.

Marking rules:

Calculator

Only Prov's on-screen calculator is allowed. Try the practice version at testconsole.provexam.com beforehand.

The questions

80 multiple-choice questions, four options each, in 240 minutes. There is no penalty for guessing, and you can flag and review.

Pacing

That is 3 minutes per question, more per question than the journeyman exam.

Scoring

You need 75%. Written results are given on site.

The practical

Master applicants also take the practical (the Utah Electrician Practical, or the Utah Residential Electrician Practical for residential master) unless they already passed it for their journeyman license. It is a separate in-person appointment with no references allowed.

If you do not pass

Retake after 30 days. After six failed attempts, the wait becomes 120 days before each further attempt. Current pass rates are not published.

Before you go

Sit a full-length, timed practice exam first. Our free practice test gives you a feel for the questions, and the full exam prep has full-length practice exams weighted to the Prov outline, with every answer explained. For eligibility and experience paths, see Utah Master Electrician requirements.
