Texas Fire Sprinkler Test Day: TFM-08 and TFM-10 at PSI
The basics
| Vendor | PSI, at its test centers |
| Tests | TFM-08 Sprinkler Statutes & Rules, TFM-10 Sprinkler Underground |
| Questions | 50 each, true/false or multiple choice |
| Pass mark | 70% on each |
| Book policy | Closed book |
| Fee | $48 per test, paid to PSI, non-refundable |
| Language | English or Spanish |
The time limit is set by PSI. Check your PSI confirmation and candidate bulletin before test day rather than relying on a figure from a forum.
Most candidates sit only TFM-08. TFM-10 is for the RME-U, unless a Texas PE license waives it.
Closed book means closed book
You are tested on Insurance Code Chapter 6003, 28 TAC 34 Subchapter G and, for TFM-10, NFPA 24. None of them come in with you.
That catches people coming from NICET, whose exams are open book. Budget your study for recall:
- the numbers;
- the time periods;
- which license allows what.
What to bring
- Identification meeting PSI's requirements, with a name that matches your registration.
- Nothing else. Personal items stay outside the testing room.
Pacing
Fifty questions is short. Read each question fully: true/false items in particular turn on a single word ("all", "only", "never").
A workable rhythm:
- Answer everything you know.
- Flag the rest.
- Come back to the flagged questions.
- Never leave one blank.
Retakes are limited
Each test can be scheduled once a week, and no more than three times in 12 months. Every attempt is another $48.
Three attempts sounds generous until you fail twice in a month. Sit TFM-08 when you are ready, not to see what is on it.
Your result has a shelf life
A passing result is valid for one year for applying. Time TFM-08 so the rest of your application, whether that is a NICET certification or TFM-10, is ready inside that year.
Where candidates lose points
- Treating TFM-08 as easy. It is all statute and rule. Designers and fitters with years in the trade still miss the fee and time-period questions because they never read Subchapter G.
- Edition drift on TFM-10. Texas adopts NFPA 24-2019. If you learned on a newer edition, check what changed.
- License scope. Know what the RME-G, RME-D, RME-U and RME-I each require, and what a Texas PE license does and does not waive.
