What's on the Massachusetts Class D Exam? Topics and Study Plan
Most people preparing for the Massachusetts Class D Systems Technician exam study it as one test. It is two, and they are scored separately.
That single structural fact should shape how you allocate your study time — because you can answer 55 of 60 questions correctly on Part I and still fail the day on Part II. Here is what each part actually contains, taken from the Board's own Candidate Information Bulletin, and how to build a study plan around it.
The structure

Both parts are open-book. Both need 70% independently. There is no combined score, and no averaging one part against the other.
Two minutes per question sounds generous until you remember that open-book means you will be looking things up. That is a time budget, not a cushion — more on that in the exam-day guide.
Part I — 60 questions, and it is mostly fire alarm
The Board publishes Part I as three subject areas with item counts:

Read that top row again. Half of Part I is NFPA 72 territory — detection, notification appliances, initiating devices, circuit supervision, power supplies, signal priorities. If you have limited study time, this is where it goes.
The second row is NEC Article 760 and its neighbours: power-limited and non-power-limited fire alarm circuits, cable types and substitutions, separation from other conductors, support and installation methods. Twenty items is a third of the part, and it is a well-bounded body of material — one of the highest returns on study time available anywhere in this exam.
The last ten items are general electrical theory. Ohm's law, series and parallel behaviour, basic AC/DC fundamentals. You either have this from the trade or you do not, and it is quick to rebuild.
Part II — 30 questions across applied skills
Part II shifts from code lookup to applied competence. The subject areas are:
- Circuit calculations (Ohm's law and its everyday applications)
- Electrical schematics and plans — reading them, tracing them, interpreting symbols
- Materials and components — knowing devices, cable types and hardware by their proper names
- Troubleshooting and testing
- Licensing laws and regulations — M.G.L. c. 141 and the Board's rules at 237 CMR
One honest caveat, because precision matters more than confidence here: the Board publishes more than one 30-question Part II outline across its Systems credentials, and the versions differ in whether a Massachusetts Amendments block appears among the subject areas. Which variant is used for Class D specifically is not something the published bulletin settles. Treat the list above as the reliable subject coverage, study 527 CMR 12.00 regardless — it is a permitted reference and the amendments are core to the trade in this state — and confirm the current outline with the Board when you apply.
The edition question nobody answers for you
The Candidate Information Bulletin lists the National Electrical Code and NFPA 72 by name with no edition year, while stating that code questions are based only on the edition listed. That is an awkward gap, and there is a rule that fills it:
New exam items may be added to reflect the adoption of a current Code seven months from the enforcing date of that Code.
Massachusetts adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code effective 24 April 2026. Seven months on is 24 November 2026 — the date from which the exam may begin testing 2026-NEC content.
If you are sitting the exam this autumn, that transition is squarely in your window, and it is worth one phone call to the Board to ask which edition your sitting is written against. Nobody else is going to volunteer that answer.
A study plan built to the weights
Working backwards from the item counts, a sensible allocation looks like this:

Two adjustments worth making to that:
Do not under-study Part II because it is smaller. It is a third of the questions and an independent pass/fail gate. A candidate who spends 90% of their preparation on NFPA 72 has optimised for the part they were already going to pass.
Practise the lookup, not just the fact. On an open-book exam the skill being tested is partly navigation. Knowing that a requirement lives in NFPA 72 Chapter 17 is worth more under time pressure than half-remembering the number itself.
