About the Massachusetts Class D Systems Technician exam

Class D Systems Technician is the individual licence any fire-alarm technician must personally hold to work in Massachusetts, issued by the Board of State Examiners of Electricians under M.G.L. c. 141 and 237 CMR. Fire alarm is regulated as electrical work here, so the exam is administered by PSI in two open-book parts — 60 questions in 120 minutes, then 30 in 60 — with 70% required on each. It draws on the National Electrical Code and NFPA 72 plus the Massachusetts Electrical Code amendments (527 CMR 12.00) and the Board’s own rules. Massachusetts grants no reciprocity for systems licences.
