ICC FN Industrial Suppression Technician: Requirements, Cost, and How to Apply
The ICC FN — Pre-engineered Industrial Fire Extinguishing System Technician certification covers suppression over industrial processes: dry chemical and clean agent systems protecting spray booths, dipping and coating operations, and similar hazards.
It is the broadest technician exam in ICC's fire family — four standards, and they do two different jobs.
There is no experience requirement
ICC does not publish an experience or education prerequisite for FN. No documented hours, no employer letter, no apprenticeship, no prerequisite certification.
As with every ICC certification, your state may still license this work directly and may treat ICC certification as supporting evidence rather than a substitute. Check with your state fire marshal before assuming FN alone authorises you to service systems commercially.
Four standards, two jobs
This is the structural fact that shapes preparation. Two of FN's standards describe the suppression system; the other two describe the process being protected:

That second pair is why Occupancy Identification is 18% of the exam — nearly a fifth. Before you can select or service a system, you have to recognise what kind of hazard you are standing in front of. Candidates who prepare only the suppression standards walk into eighteen percent of the paper cold.

FN or FK?

Neither requires the other. They protect different equipment in different buildings, and the agents differ. FN is the broader and more demanding of the two in reading terms — four standards rather than two, and a hazard-recognition domain FK does not have.
Technicians who service both restaurant hoods and industrial process protection hold both. If you are choosing one, choose the one that matches the work in front of you.
Pre-engineered means the numbers are fixed
Worth understanding before you study: a pre-engineered system is listed as a package. Nozzle counts, pipe lengths, agent quantities and coverage limits come from the manufacturer's listed design, not from a calculation you perform.
That makes FN a recognition and procedure exam rather than a design one. You are being tested on whether you can identify the hazard, match it to a listed system, install and service it per the standard, and document it — not on whether you can calculate a discharge.
What it costs
ICC prices exams individually with a member discount. ICC's own reporting puts its fire alarm and fire sprinkler certification exams at $199; confirm the current FN figure on its page in the ICC Exam Catalog.
Four standards is the real cost here. Confirm the approved reference list and edition years in the catalog before buying anything — that is the only authoritative source.
How to apply
- Create a myICC account at iccsafe.org.
- Find FN in the Exam Catalog; confirm approved references and edition years.
- Purchase the exam.
- Schedule through ICC PRONTO remote proctoring or a Pearson VUE test centre.
There is no application review. Registration is a purchase.
If you do not pass
Six attempts within a six-month period, fee payable each time. Exhaust all six and you wait six months from your first attempt before registering again.
Renewal
Three-year cycle through myICC, on CEUs:

At least half must come from ICC training or a Preferred Provider, and ICC audits renewals monthly.
If you add FK or FE alongside FN — a common combination for a service technician — the set renews on 6.0 CEUs total rather than 3.0 each.
Where to start
