Four standards, and they do different jobs

FN is the broadest technician exam in the family. Two of its standards describe the suppression system: NFPA 17 for dry chemical and NFPA 2001 for clean agent. The other two describe the process being protected: NFPA 33 for spray application and NFPA 34 for dipping, coating and printing.

Occupancy Identification at 18% is where that second pair earns its place. Before you can select or service a system, you have to recognise what kind of hazard you are standing in front of.

Pre-engineered means the numbers are fixed

The credential is for pre-engineered systems, which ship as a listed package with nozzle counts, pipe lengths and agent quantities already determined. You are not sizing the system, you are verifying it matches its listing. That is why component requirements is 30% and there is no design-calculation domain at all.

Inspection is 2%

Two questions out of eighty. The exam's centre of gravity is components, service and knowing the process, not the periodic inspection routine.

Where to start

Work the heaviest domain first and check yourself against the weighting, not against how interesting the material is. The published percentages are the closest thing to an answer key you get before exam day.

Our free 10-question practice test draws from the same weighted pool, so the mix you see is the mix the exam uses.
