ICC CR Plans Examiner II: Requirements, the CN Prerequisite, and Cost

Every other exam in ICC's fire family is open to anyone who pays for it. CR is the exception.

To sit the ICC CR — Commercial Fire Alarm Plans Examiner II exam you must already hold a current CN certification. Not an expired one, not an equivalent from another body, not documented experience in lieu. That prerequisite is the single most important planning fact about this credential.

What the prerequisite actually means

Two consequences follow, and both affect how you sequence your year:

You need two exam cycles, not one. CN first, pass it, then CR. If you are budgeting time, that is two registrations, two preparation periods and two sets of nerves — and CN has its own twelve questions of arithmetic to get through first.

Your CN must stay current. ICC certifications run three-year cycles. If your CN lapses, the foundation under CR lapses with it. Renew both together and diary them as a pair rather than as two separate obligations.

Beyond the CN requirement, ICC publishes no experience or education prerequisite. There are no documented hours to submit and nothing to be approved for.

What CR adds over CN

CN and CR are both submittal-review credentials against the same standards. CR is the advanced one, and the difference shows up in two places.

First, in what is reviewed. CR reaches into emergency communications and mass notification — the systems covered by NFPA 72's ECS chapter — which sit outside the core of a CN review.

Second, and more tellingly, in concentration:

Two domains are 67% of the CR paper — documentation and control equipment — and everything else is single digits. Note what happened to calculations: CN's 20% arithmetic domain drops to 8% on CR.

That inversion is the headline for anyone sequencing the two. CN rewards computation; CR rewards depth in submittal review and panel and wiring arrangements. Preparing for CR the way you prepared for CN will aim you at the wrong third of the exam. The full CR weighting is here.

What it costs

ICC's own reporting puts its fire alarm and fire sprinkler certification exams at $199, with a member discount — and remember you are paying that twice on this path, once for CN and once for CR. Confirm both live prices in the ICC Exam Catalog.

The books largely overlap with CN's, which is the one economy on this route. Verify the exact editions in the catalog; ICC's edition years lag the current published standards deliberately.

How to apply

1. Hold a current CN.
2. Find CR in the Exam Catalog; confirm approved references, editions and that your CN status is recognised on your myICC account.
3. Purchase the exam.
4. Schedule through ICC PRONTO remote proctoring or a Pearson VUE test centre.

If your myICC record does not reflect a current CN, resolve that with ICC before you buy — not at the test centre.

If you do not pass

Six attempts within a six-month period, fee payable each time. Exhaust all six and you wait six months from your first attempt before registering again.

Renewal

Three-year cycle through myICC, on CEUs — and here the pair works in your favour:

Holding CN and CR together costs 6.0 CEUs total, not 3.0 each. Two certifications for double the CEU requirement of one is the worst ratio in the table — but adding a third, fourth or fifth certification after that costs nothing extra. If you are already committed to two, three or more is close to free.

At least half your CEUs must come from ICC training or a Preferred Provider, and ICC audits renewals monthly.
