ICC CN Fire Alarm Plans Examiner: Requirements, Cost, and How to Apply

The ICC CN — Commercial Fire Alarm Plans Examiner I certification is for the person who reviews fire alarm submittals: shop drawings, riser diagrams, battery calculations, device schedules, and whether any of it complies before a single device gets mounted.

It is also the gateway credential in ICC's fire alarm plan-review track. CR — Plans Examiner II — requires a current CN. You cannot skip to the advanced certification.

There is no experience requirement

ICC does not publish an experience or education prerequisite for CN. No documented hours, no employer letter, no prerequisite certification.

That is the meaningful difference from the NICET path, where documented work experience gates the higher levels. A designer who has been producing fire alarm submittals for two years can sit CN immediately and hold a review credential in their own name.

What the credential covers

CN is a desk credential. The exam tests what a plans examiner does to a submittal package:

AreaStandard
Documentation and plan readingNFPA 72 Ch. 7, IBC/IFC
Control panel, wiring and equipmentNFPA 72 Ch. 10 and 12, NEC
CalculationsNFPA 72 10.6, NEC Art. 760
Notification appliancesNFPA 72 Ch. 18
Initiating devicesNFPA 72 Ch. 17
Functional control interfacesNFPA 72 Ch. 21
General administrationIFC, IBC

The distribution is the thing to understand before you start studying: documentation and control equipment are 59% between them, and calculations is its own 20% domain. The full weighting is here.

CN versus CA versus CR

CredentialThe workPrerequisite
CAInspecting installed systems in the fieldNone
CNReviewing fire alarm submittalsNone
CRAdvanced submittal reviewCurrent CN required

If you inspect, take CA. If you review drawings, CN is where you start — and it is the only route to CR.

What it costs

ICC's own reporting puts its fire alarm and fire sprinkler certification exams at $199, with a member discount. Confirm the live price on the CN page in the ICC Exam Catalog.

Books are the bigger line item. CN draws on NFPA 72, the National Electrical Code and the I-codes. Verify the exact editions in the catalog before buying — ICC's edition years lag the current published standards deliberately, and section numbers move between editions.

How to apply

  1. Create a myICC account at iccsafe.org.
  2. Find CN in the Exam Catalog; confirm approved references and editions.
  3. Purchase the exam.
  4. Schedule through ICC PRONTO remote proctoring or a Pearson VUE test centre.

There is no application review step. Registration is a purchase.

If you do not pass

Six attempts within a six-month period, fee payable each time. Exhaust all six and you wait six months from your first attempt before registering again.

Renewal

Three-year cycle through myICC, on CEUs:

Certifications renewedCEUs requiredFrom ICC or a Preferred Provider
13.01.5
2–56.03.0
6–109.04.5

At least half must come from ICC training or a Preferred Provider. Worth planning around if you intend to add CR: two certifications renew on 6.0 CEUs total, not 3.0 each, and both run on the same three-year clock.

ICC audits renewals monthly and asks for proof of each claimed activity.

Where to start

One fifth of this exam is arithmetic — battery sizing, voltage drop and conduit fill — and it is the part most candidates skim because it feels like design work rather than review. The full domain breakdown explains why that is a mistake.

Our free 10-question practice test draws from the same weighted pool.
