ICC CA Fire Alarm Inspector: Requirements, Cost, and How to Apply
The ICC CA — Commercial Fire Alarm Inspector certification is the credential for the person standing in the building deciding whether the installed system matches the approved drawings and the code.
It sits at the acceptance-and-inspection end of the fire alarm lifecycle, which makes it the natural counterpart to the plan-review credentials (CN and CR) rather than a competitor to them. Plenty of people hold both.
There is no experience requirement
ICC does not publish an experience or education prerequisite for the CA. No documented hours, no supervisor sign-off, no prerequisite certification.
This is the structural difference between the ICC family and the NICET path. NICET gates its higher levels on documented work experience; ICC gates nothing. If you can pass the exam, you can hold the certification.
That cuts both ways, and it is worth being honest about it: because the credential does not certify experience, some jurisdictions treat it as one component of competency rather than the whole of it. Check what your AHJ or employer actually requires before assuming CA alone is sufficient.
What the credential covers
CA is an inspection credential. The exam is built around what an inspector verifies in the field:

Which of the three fire alarm credentials you want
ICC issues three commercial fire alarm certifications and they are genuinely different jobs:

If you inspect, take CA. If you review drawings at a desk, start at CN. CR is the only one in the family with a certification prerequisite.
What it costs
ICC's own reporting puts its fire alarm and fire sprinkler certification exams at $199, with members paying less than non-members. Confirm the live figure on the CA page in the ICC Exam Catalog before registering.
Books are the larger cost here. CA tests four documents:

If you already own a 2022 NFPA 72, the chapter structure is close but section numbers have moved. Verify the current edition list in the catalog before you buy — ICC updates it on its own cycle.
How to apply
- Create a myICC account at iccsafe.org.
- Find CA in the Exam Catalog; confirm the approved references and editions.
- Purchase the exam.
- Schedule it through ICC PRONTO remote proctoring or a Pearson VUE test centre.
There is no application review. Registration is a purchase.
If you do not pass
Six attempts within a six-month period, with the fee payable each time. Exhaust all six and you wait six months from your first attempt before registering again.
Renewal
Three-year cycle, renewed through myICC on CEUs:

At least half must come from ICC training or an ICC Preferred Provider. Note the second row: if you go on to add CN, your renewal requirement moves to 6.0 CEUs total, not 3.0 each. Holding several ICC certifications is cheaper per certification than holding one.
ICC audits renewals monthly and asks for proof of every claimed activity.
