ICC CA Exam Day: Four Books, Two Minutes a Question

Sixty questions in two hours sounds comfortable until you count the books. The CA tests four separate documents, and the cost of opening the wrong one is most of your two-minute budget for that question.

Knowing which book answers which question is the skill this exam actually measures.

The format

Questions60
Time2 hours
Per question2 minutes
Book policyOpen — you bring your own references
Pass mark75%
DeliveryICC PRONTO remote proctoring, or a Pearson VUE test centre

Two minutes is a middling budget for this family — more generous than FE's 72 seconds, far tighter than F3's three and a half minutes. It supports roughly one real lookup per question if you go straight to the right book.

Which book answers what

This is the mapping worth memorising before you memorise anything else:

If the question is about…Open
Appliance spacing, candela, audibilityNFPA 72 Ch. 18
Detector spacing, manual stationsNFPA 72 Ch. 17
Panels, off-premises communicationNFPA 72 Ch. 10 and 24
Elevator recall, HVAC shutdown, door releaseNFPA 72 Ch. 21
ITM frequencies and methodsNFPA 72 Ch. 14
Record of completion, documentationNFPA 72 Ch. 7
Circuit classes, survivability, pathwaysNFPA 72 Ch. 12
Conductor sizing, power limits, wiring methodsNEC Art. 760
Where a system is required at allIFC / IBC
Permits, approvals, administrationIFC Ch. 1

Most of the paper lives in NFPA 72. The NEC appears for wiring specifics and the I-codes appear for whether a system is required and for administration. Reaching for the IFC on a spacing question is a wasted minute.

The edition mismatch

CA tests these editions:

ReferenceEdition
NFPA 722019
National Electrical Code2020
International Fire Code2021
International Building Code2021

If you own a 2022 NFPA 72 — many working technicians do — the chapter structure is close but section numbers have moved. You will look up what you are sure is the right section and read something adjacent.

Confirm the current edition list on the CA page in the ICC Exam Catalog. ICC revises it on its own schedule, and the catalog is the only authoritative source.

What you may carry in

Annotations made before exam day are permitted; annotations made during the exam are not.

Tab for the real weighting

The most common preparation error on CA is tabbing detection heavily and notification lightly. The published weights say the opposite:

DomainWeightTab priority
Notification Appliances22%Heaviest — Ch. 18 tables
Initiating Devices19%Ch. 17 spacing
Control and Communication15%Ch. 10, 24
Ability to Read Plans13%
Functional Control Interfaces10%Ch. 21
Inspection and Testing6%Ch. 14 tables
Documentation5%Ch. 7
Wiring, Circuits and Pathways5%NEC 760
General Administration5%IFC Ch. 1

Notification is the single largest domain. Tab Chapter 18's appliance tables first.

PRONTO or a test centre

Four books is a real consideration. PRONTO lets you sit at your own desk with your own tabbed set — you need a quiet room, a clear desk, a webcam and a stable connection, and the proctor will ask you to pan the room. Pearson VUE removes the technology risk but means carrying four books and working on unfamiliar desk space.

If you do not pass

Six attempts within a six-month period, paying the fee each time. Use all six and you wait six months from your first attempt.
