Notification outweighs detection
Most candidates prepare detection first: smoke detector spacing, heat detector ratings, manual station placement. Initiating devices is 19%. Notification appliances is 22%, and it is the largest domain on the paper.
That means candela ratings, audibility, visible coverage and mounting height deserve more of your time than the split most study plans use.
Inspection and testing is only 6%
This surprises people, because the credential is called Inspector. NFPA 72 Chapter 14, the test methods and frequency tables, is worth six points out of a hundred. The exam is far more about verifying what was installed than about the periodic testing regime.
The editions are not the current ones
CA tests NFPA 72-2019, the 2020 NEC and the 2021 IFC/IBC. If you own a 2022 NFPA 72, the chapter structure is close but section numbers move.
Where to start
Work the heaviest domain first and check yourself against the weighting, not against how interesting the material is. The published percentages are the closest thing to an answer key you get before exam day.
Our free 10-question practice test draws from the same weighted pool, so the mix you see is the mix the exam uses.
