Wyoming Journeyman Electrician License: Requirements and How to Apply
Wyoming licenses electricians through the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety (DFPES). The individual licenses are apprentice, journeyman and master. The electrical contractor license is a business license, and a contractor must employ a full-time master as its master of record. Wyoming has no residential electrician license. Low-voltage and limited technician licenses also exist, with their own exams.
Start as an apprentice
Apprentices register with the state for $20 a year and must register within 10 days of starting work.
Experience and classroom hours
To sit the journeyman exam you need:
- 8,000 hours (four years) of on-the-job training, with no more than 75% in any one of residential, commercial or industrial work, and
- 576 classroom hours from a Department of Labor–approved apprenticeship.
Electrical school can count for up to two years (4,000 hours) of the experience.
The exam
ICC gives the Wyoming Journeyman Electrician exam (385) at Pearson VUE test centers for $115:
- 80 multiple-choice questions in 4 hours, four options and one correct answer each,
- open book with the 2023 NEC and Ugly's Electrical Reference (any edition); the hardcover NEC Handbook is also allowed,
- 70% to pass. After a failed attempt you wait 10 days to retest.
What is on the exam breaks down the ICC outline.

Renewal and continuing education
A journeyman license expires January 1 of the third year after it is issued. You need 16 hours of board-approved continuing education per license period, at least 8 of them on the NEC. There is a 45-day late window with a $50 late fee; after that you must retest.
Licensed in another state?
Wyoming accepts journeyman licenses from Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas and Utah, provided:
- the license was earned by exam with 70% or better,
- you have held it for at least one year, and
- you still meet Wyoming's hours and schooling requirements.
Reciprocity can be used once. Anyone who failed a Wyoming exam must wait three years before applying by reciprocity.
