What's on the Texas TFM-03 Type K Test?
TFM-03 is based on NFPA 10, 17A and 96, across five subjects the State Fire Marshal names: wet chemical systems, kitchen pre-engineered systems, testing, maintenance and fire classification.

What SFMO says it covers
"All questions on this test are based on the information from the following NFPA standards adopted in the rules": NFPA 10, NFPA 17A and NFPA 96.
SFMO lists five subjects:
- Specific requirements for wet chemical systems.
- Specific requirements for pre-engineered systems protecting cooking operations.
- Requirements and frequency for system testing of systems protecting cooking operations.
- Requirements and frequency for maintenance of systems protecting cooking operations.
- Classification of fire types.
SFMO publishes no weights for these subjects.
What that means in the standards
- NFPA 17A (wet chemical):
- components;
- system requirements for cooking hazards;
- plans and acceptance tests;
- inspection, maintenance and recharging.
- NFPA 96 (commercial cooking):
- the extinguishing equipment;
- fuel and electric shut-off;
- manual actuation;
- hood and duct conditions;
- the procedures for use, inspection, testing and maintenance.
- NFPA 10: fire classification, and selecting portable extinguishers for cooking areas (Class K).
Which editions?
Texas adopts NFPA 17A-2021 and 96-2021 (28 TAC §34.507), the editions our questions use. For NFPA 10, Texas adopts 2018. See the TFM-02 article for the differences.
Already ICC certified?
The ICC Pre-Engineered Kitchen (FK) exam replaces TFM-03.
Study order
Learn the maintenance and testing frequencies cold, because closed-book tests reward exact intervals. Then the shut-off and actuation requirements, which are the heart of a kitchen system. Then the fire classes.
Our free practice test covers all three Texas tests, and the full question bank has a separate TFM-03 exam. Every answer cites the section it comes from.
