TFM-01: Statutes & Rules
SFMO is explicit: "All questions on this test are based on the Texas Insurance Code Chapter 6001 and the Texas Administrative Code 34.500."
Insurance Code Chapter 6001 covers:
- firm registration and branch offices;
- the hydrostatic testing registration;
- required insurance;
- employee licences and apprentice permits;
- examinations, continuing education and renewal;
- prohibited practices, discipline and the criminal penalty.
28 TAC 34 Subchapter E covers:
- definitions;
- licence types and what each allows;
- applications, fees and tests;
- installation and service requirements;
- service tags: their size, content and how long a printed tag may be used.
Service tags are a favourite. Know the dimensions and the required information.
TFM-02: NFPA 10
SFMO says TFM-02 questions "include but are not limited to" four subjects:
- General requirements for portable fire extinguishers
- Selection of the proper extinguisher based on the type of hazard or fire classification
- Distribution, inspection, and maintenance requirements
- Hydrostatic testing of extinguishers, hoses, etc.
SFMO publishes no weights for these subjects. In practice, subject 3 is the largest body of material in NFPA 10, covering:
- placement and travel distance;
- the monthly inspection;
- annual maintenance;
- internal examinations;
- recharging.
The test "may refer to a drawing, chart, or figure", and it includes no questions about specific manufacturers' equipment.
Which edition?
Texas adopts NFPA 10-2018 (28 TAC §34.507). The current edition is 2022, and a few requirements changed between them. The classic one: the 2018 edition requires the premixed agent in AFFF and FFFP extinguishers to be replaced at least every 3 years. Study from 2018, or know the differences.
Already ICC certified?
The ICC/NAFED Certified Portable Fire Extinguisher Technician exam replaces TFM-02. If you hold it, you only need TFM-01. Our ICC FE practice exams cover that route.
Study order
Most technicians are stronger on the equipment than the law, so start with TFM-01. Chapter 6001 and Subchapter E are short enough to read end to end, and closed-book law questions reward exact numbers: fees, days, dimensions, intervals.
Our free practice test mixes both tests, and every answer cites the section it comes from. The full question bank has separate TFM-01 and TFM-02 exams.
