Oklahoma Residential Journeyman Electrician License: Requirements and the Exam
Oklahoma's Construction Industries Board (CIB) issues a Residential Electrical Journeyman license alongside the unlimited one. It takes half the experience of the unlimited license and a shorter exam, but it limits where you can work. CIB decides who is eligible; PSI gives the exam.
What the license covers
The residential journeyman installs, repairs and alters electrical wiring on homes, in a supervised environment. CIB's rule limits it to one- and two-family dwellings in a single structure: at most two units, with 5 feet of separation. It does not cover apartments, motels or multi-family townhomes. (PSI's bulletin describes the exam as covering "one-, two-, or three-family residences," but the CIB rule is the narrower one.)
Experience
To apply you must be at least 18 and have 4,000 hours (two years) as an apprentice under the direct supervision of an unlimited or residential journeyman or contractor.
- No more than 1,000 hours of formal electrical classroom education can count toward the 4,000. You will need a transcript.
- Oklahoma experience counts only while you are registered as an apprentice.
Applying
- Submit the journeyman application to CIB.
- Once CIB approves it, you get an Ok Con ID number for your PSI account.
- Schedule and pay for the exam with PSI.
Your exam eligibility does not expire.

Pass rates
CIB does not publish pass rates for the electrical exams.
Renewal and continuing education
- The license renews every year and expires on the last day of your birth month. You can renew up to one year after it expires; after that you reapply and retest.
- Continuing education starts January 1, 2026: 12 hours every three years, with 6 hours on the codes and revisions adopted by the OUBCC. You are exempt for three years after passing your current licensing exam.
Reciprocity
CIB lists journeyman reciprocity agreements with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming. CIB's page does not say whether those agreements cover the residential journeyman license. If you hold a residential license from one of those states, ask CIB before you count on it.
Moving up to unlimited
The Unlimited Electrical Journeyman takes 8,000 hours, 4,000 of them commercial or industrial. A licensed residential electrician may work as an apprentice on commercial and industrial jobs to build those hours. See Oklahoma Journeyman Electrician requirements.
