Iowa Residential Electrician License: Requirements and the Exam

The Residential Electrician license is Iowa's entry-level license for dwelling work, issued by the Electrical Examining Board within the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL). The exam is a 50-item PSI test on the 2023 NEC. It is also the first step toward the Residential Master, and with more hours, toward the Class A Journeyman.

What the license covers

Iowa's residential licenses cover dwellings of up to four units, plus accessory structures of 3,000 square feet or less, two stories or less, on the same lot, according to the Board's FAQ. Local ordinances may restrict residential licenses, so check with your city or county.

Four routes to the exam

The rule (481 IAC 401.2(8)) allows any one of these:

  1. 6,000 hours as an apprentice. You may take the exam at 5,000 hours, but the license is issued only once you reach 6,000.
  2. 4,000 supervised hours plus one academic year of approved trade school.
  3. 8,000 hours as a licensed unclassified person, including 2,000 residential hours.
  4. A completed registered residential apprenticeship.

A residential post-secondary program must be at least 1,000 instruction hours plus 4,000 hours on the job. DIAL's sponsorship sheet also mentions a route through a Special Electrician residential endorsement, which the current rule does not include; ask the Board if that applies to you.

Getting approved to test

  1. Apply and send the Board a Testing Sponsorship Request, no more than a month before you are ready.
  2. Watch for the sponsorship letter by email. It has your PSI registration code and is good for two attempts or six months.
  3. Pay and schedule with PSI.
  4. After you pass, finish the license application online at iowaelectrical.gov. You pay the license fee only after passing.

If you test at 5,000 apprentice hours, remember the other clock: your pass must be within 24 months of your license application.

License fees

All Iowa licenses run on a three-year term, and the current cycle is 2026 to 2028. The Residential Electrician fee is $75 per term, prorated by when it is issued: $75 at the start of the cycle (January 2026), $50 in 2027 and $25 in 2028. The rules list no separate application fee, and a late renewal adds 10% per month for up to three months.

Continuing education

18 contact hours per three-year term, at least 6 on the NEC. A contact hour is 50 minutes. A license issued in year two needs 12 hours; in year three, 6. Six NEC hours apply either way, and nothing carries over.

Reciprocity: none

Iowa's reciprocity agreements cover journeyman and master licenses only. There is no published reciprocity for the Residential Electrician license. Out-of-state candidates qualify through the routes above and take the exam.
