Iowa Residential Master Electrician License: Requirements and the Exam
The Residential Master is Iowa's top license for dwelling work. It is issued by the Electrical Examining Board within the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL), and the exam is given by PSI. You will see the exam called both "Residential Master" and "Master Residential" Electrician; PSI's catalog uses Master Residential, and it is the same exam.
What the license covers
According to the Board's FAQ, residential licenses cover dwellings of up to four units, plus accessory structures of 3,000 square feet or less, two stories or less, on the same lot. Anything beyond that, such as a five-unit building or commercial work, is outside a residential license. Local ordinances may also restrict residential licenses, so check with the city or county where you work.
Who qualifies to sit the exam
Under the rule (481 IAC 401.2(5)) you need:
- A current Residential Electrician or Journeyman license, and
- 2,000 verified hours working as a residential electrician or journeyman.
DIAL's testing sponsorship sheet also lists a route for a Special Electrician with a residential endorsement and 4,000 hours. That route is not in the current rule, which has no residential endorsement, so confirm with the Board before relying on it.

Getting approved to test
- Apply and submit a Testing Sponsorship Request to the Board, no earlier than a month before you are ready.
- Get the sponsorship letter, emailed with your PSI registration code. It covers two attempts or six months.
- Pay and schedule with PSI.
- After passing, complete the license application at iowaelectrical.gov. The license fee is due only after you pass.
Your passing score has to be within 24 months of the license application.
License fees
The Residential Master is priced like the Class A Master: $375 per three-year term, prorated by when it is issued in the current 2026 to 2028 cycle.
| Issued in | Residential Master fee |
|---|---|
| January 2026 (start of the cycle) | $375 |
| 2027 | $250 |
| 2028 | $125 |
The rules list no separate application fee. A late renewal adds 10% of the fee for each month late, up to three months.
Continuing education
The same as every Iowa three-year license: 18 contact hours per term, at least 6 on the NEC, with a contact hour of 50 minutes. Licenses issued in the second or third year of a cycle need 12 or 6 hours, with 6 NEC hours either way. Hours do not carry over.
Reciprocity: none
Iowa's 13 reciprocity agreements cover only the journeyman and master licenses. No reciprocity is published for the Residential Master or Residential Electrician. Coming from another state, you qualify and test the same way as an Iowa candidate.
Pass rates
Neither PSI nor the Board publishes pass rates.
