Nearly a third is service work

Maintenance and recharge is 32%, the single largest domain, and it sits almost entirely in NFPA 17A's inspection, maintenance and recharge chapter. Add general component requirements at 25% and 57% of the exam is the system itself: nozzles, detectors, actuators, cylinders, and what you do to them semi-annually.

Only two standards, and they split cleanly

FK lists NFPA 17A, covering wet chemical extinguishing systems, and NFPA 96, covering ventilation control and fire protection of commercial cooking operations. The split is clean: 17A is the suppression system, 96 is the hood, duct and appliance environment it protects. Roughly 70/30 by weight in 17A's favour.

Inspection is 4%

The smallest domain on the paper. Do not confuse it with maintenance. In NFPA 17A terms, inspection is the quick visual check, while the semi-annual maintenance is the detailed one. The exam weights them 4% and 32% respectively.

Where to start

Work the heaviest domain first and check yourself against the weighting, not against how interesting the material is. The published percentages are the closest thing to an answer key you get before exam day.

Our free 10-question practice test draws from the same weighted pool, so the mix you see is the mix the exam uses.
