ICC FE Exam Day: 72 Seconds a Question and How to Survive It

Most open-book advice tells you to prepare your references so you can look things up. On the FE, that advice will fail you.

One hundred questions in two hours is 72 seconds each — the tightest time budget in the ICC fire family, and less than half of what F3 candidates get. You cannot look up a hundred answers. The open book on this exam is a safety net for the dozen questions you genuinely do not know, not a study method.

The format

Questions100
Time2 hours
Per question72 seconds
Book policyOpen — you bring your own references
Pass mark75%
DeliveryICC PRONTO remote proctoring, or a Pearson VUE test centre

Compare that per-question figure across the family and the outlier is obvious:

ExamQuestionsTimePer question
F3603.5 h3 min 30 s
CR602.5 h2 min 30 s
CA / CN602 h2 min 00 s
CF / CP752.5 h2 min 00 s
FK / FN802 h1 min 30 s
FE1002 h1 min 12 s

What this means for how you prepare

You need NFPA 10 in recall, not in reference. Specifically, the numbers that recur across the heaviest domains have to be automatic:

If you are opening the book for any of those, you are already behind the clock. Budget roughly 10–15 lookups for the whole paper and spend them on the things that genuinely vary.

A workable pacing rule: 25 questions per 30 minutes. If you are not at question 50 by the one-hour mark, start answering on best judgement and flag rather than look up.

What you may carry in

ICC's reference rules apply and proctors enforce them:

The distinction in those last two points matters: annotations made before exam day are permitted, annotations made during the exam are not.

Confirm the approved reference list and edition year for FE on its page in the ICC Exam Catalog before buying anything.

Tab NFPA 10 for the weighting

FE is almost entirely one standard, so your tabs are competing against each other rather than against other books. Tab against the published weights:

DomainWeightWhat to tab
Annual Maintenance25%Maintenance chapter, procedure tables
Selection, Placement and Installation20%Travel distance and hazard-class tables
Recordkeeping and Safety16%Tagging, records, safety requirements
Hydrostatic Testing15%Interval and test-pressure tables
Six-year and Internal Maintenance10%Internal examination intervals
Recharging10%Recharge agent and procedure requirements
Inspection4%Monthly inspection requirements

Six or seven tabs, placed on the tables you will actually open — not thirty tabs on every chapter heading.

PRONTO or a test centre

PRONTO lets you sit at your own desk with your own book, which suits a single-reference exam well. You need a quiet room, a clear desk, a webcam and a stable connection, and the proctor will ask you to pan the room first.

Pearson VUE means an unfamiliar desk but no technology risk. With only one book to carry, the usual argument for testing at home matters less here than it does on F3 or CP.

If you do not pass

Six attempts within a six-month period, paying the fee each time. Exhaust all six and you wait six months from your first attempt before registering again.

If you ran out of time rather than knowledge — which is the common FE failure — do not simply re-read NFPA 10. Drill the recurring intervals and tables until they are recall, then re-sit.

Before you go

The full domain weighting is here, and our free 10-question practice test draws from the same weighted pool, so the mix you see is the mix the exam uses.
