ICC CP Exam Day: 23 Hydraulics Questions and a Two-Minute Clock

Thirty-one percent of the CP sits in one domain — hydraulic calculations and water supply. That is twenty-three of seventy-five questions, and it is the largest single domain in the ICC fire family, bigger than F3's fire protection domain and bigger than FK's maintenance domain.

Now put it against a two-minute-per-question clock. That is the whole exam-day problem.

The pacing maths

If twenty-three hydraulics questions take you three minutes each, that is 69 minutes of your 150 — leaving 81 minutes for the other fifty-two questions, or 93 seconds each. Workable, but only just.

If they take four minutes each, you are at 92 minutes and the rest of the paper gets 67 seconds a question. That is where candidates fail CP.

The pacing rule that works: do not let any single hydraulics question exceed three minutes. Flag it, answer with your best estimate, move on. A flagged question you return to with ten minutes left is worth more than a perfect answer that cost you two questions elsewhere.

The calculator is not a detail here

Check the permitted-device policy for CP on its page in the ICC Exam Catalog, and check it again close to your test date. Policies are set per exam and per delivery method.

Default to a simple, non-programmable, non-communicating calculator with no stored formulas. If you are testing via PRONTO, confirm what the proctor will accept before the room scan rather than during it. A phone will not be permitted under any delivery method.

Practise on the calculator you will actually bring. Discovering on exam day that your muscle memory belongs to a different keypad is a slow, avoidable tax across twenty-three questions.

What you may carry in

That last point deserves attention on a calculation-heavy paper: you will be working problems on scratch paper, not in the margins of NFPA 13.

Tab the hydraulic tables — friction loss, pipe schedules, density/area curves, hose allowances — so they open on reflex. Every second saved there is repeated twenty-three times.

The editions matter

NFPA 13 was restructured between recent editions, and storage and hazard classification moved. Two domains on this paper — commodities/storage at 8% and use group/hazard at 9% — sit directly in the relocated material.

Confirm the exact edition years in the Exam Catalog before you pack. Working from a newer NFPA 13 than the exam was written against will cost you time precisely where you can least afford it.

PRONTO or a test centre

PRONTO puts you at your own desk with your own books and your own calculator, subject to the proctor accepting it on camera. Good for a calculation exam where familiar tools matter. Pearson VUE removes technology risk but means an unfamiliar desk and carrying your set.

For CP specifically, the calculator question tilts this. If your preferred calculator is borderline under the policy, a test centre gives you a definitive answer before you start rather than a negotiation during the room scan.

If you do not pass

Six attempts within a six-month period, fee payable each time. Exhaust all six and you wait six months from your first attempt.

If you ran out of clock, do not re-read the standards. Drill hydraulic calculations against a stopwatch until each one lands inside three minutes, then re-sit.
