How to Earn NICET CPD Points Online (Without Traveling)

NICET certifications aren't permanent. They run on a rolling three-year certification period, and to keep yours active you have to recertify before it lapses — which means accumulating 90 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points over that period. For the full rules on how the program works, see our complete guide to NICET recertification. This article is about the practical side: how to actually bank those points online, from your own schedule, without booking travel to a conference.

For years, the assumption was that "continuing education" meant taking time off, driving to a seminar, and sitting in a hotel ballroom. It doesn't have to anymore. Online continuing education earns the same CPD points as a classroom — and it's usually faster, cheaper, and easier to fit around a full field schedule.

Online counts the same as a classroom

For continuing education, the math is simple: 1 CPD point per contact hour of qualifying instruction. A focused one-hour course earns 1 point; a two-hour course earns 2. There's no shortcut for skimming — you have to complete the course content and demonstrate you learned it, typically by passing an end-of-course assessment, for the hours to count.

Where the course happens — a classroom, a conference, or your laptop at the kitchen table — doesn't change the point value. What matters is that the instruction is legitimate, relevant to your certification's scope, and documented with a certificate that states the contact hours and CPD points earned.

What makes an online course actually qualify

Two things determine whether an online course counts toward your recertification:

One important limit: NICET's Additional Education category is capped, commonly at around 72 of the 90 required points. That means coursework can carry the large majority of your recertification — but not all of it. The remaining points have to come from other qualifying categories, like relevant work experience, professional service, or technical publications. Most working technicians pick those up just by doing their jobs, but it's worth knowing the cap exists so you don't assume you can bank all 90 from courses alone.

How to bank points without leaving home

Self-paced online courses are built for exactly this. Every course in our CPD catalog earns 1 CPD point per contact hour, is scoped tightly to a NICET discipline, and issues a dated certificate of completion the moment you pass the end quiz — no waiting, no manual request, no travel.

If you want to see how the format works before spending anything, start with the free What's New in the Current NFPA 72 Edition course. From there you can bank points an hour or two at a time with focused courses like Sizing Secondary Power for Fire Alarm Systems and NAC Voltage-Drop Calculations & Wire Sizing on the fire alarm side, or Hydraulic Calculations Masterclass and Water Supply Analysis on the water-based side — or take the whole catalog through a membership and knock out your recert cycle in one pass.

Keep your records as you go

You are responsible for documenting your CPD activity. NICET can audit a certification at recertification time, so save each certificate of completion as you earn it rather than trying to reconstruct three years of activity right before your deadline. A dated certificate that states the contact hours and CPD points earned is exactly the kind of record an audit expects to see — and instant-issue online certificates make that easy to keep organized.

Where to start

Treat CPD as an ongoing habit rather than a month-35 scramble. Techs who log a few points every quarter almost never feel deadline pressure. If you're just getting oriented, read the full recertification guide first, then browse the course catalog and pick the topics closest to your day-to-day work.

Frequently asked questions

Do online continuing-education courses count for NICET recertification? Yes — qualifying online instruction earns CPD points at the same rate as a classroom, 1 point per contact hour, as long as the content is relevant to your certification's scope and you complete it with a passing assessment and a documented certificate.

How many CPD points do I need? 90 points over your rolling three-year certification period. See the full recertification guide for how the point categories and the Additional Education cap work.

How fast can I earn points online? As fast as you can complete qualifying courses. Because each contact hour is worth a point and self-paced courses issue certificates the moment you pass, a handful of one- and two-hour courses can make up a meaningful shortfall in a weekend.

Do I get a certificate I can show in an audit? Yes. Our courses issue a dated certificate of completion stating the contact hours and CPD points the moment you pass the end quiz — the exact documentation NICET expects to see.

NICET's CPD requirements — the point total, the education cap, and which activities qualify — are set by NICET and can change between certification cycles. Always verify the current requirements for your specific certification on the official NICET site before you rely on them.
