NICET Recertification: How CPD Points Work

NICET certifications aren’t permanent — they run on a rolling three-year certification period, and to keep yours active you have to recertify before it lapses. The 90-point / 3-year rule

The Additional Education cap

The remaining points have to come from other qualifying categories — things like relevant work experience, professional membership and service, technical publications, or presenting at industry events, depending on what your specific certification’s CPD requirements recognize.

In practice this cap rarely trips people up: most working NICET-certified technicians and designers pick up points from other categories just by doing their jobs. But it’s worth knowing the cap exists so you don’t assume you can bank all 90 points from courses alone. What counts — and how points are calculated

Qualifying education has to be relevant to your certification’s scope. For NICET Fire Alarm Systems certholders, that means content grounded in the codes and practices that actually govern the work — NFPA 72 requirements, NEC wiring and power rules, detector and notification-appliance design, inspection/testing/maintenance (ITM) methods, and related interface and troubleshooting skills. For NICET Water-Based Systems Layout certholders, it means content grounded in NFPA 13 (and the related 13D/13R, 20, 22, and 24/291 standards) — hydraulic calculations, storage and commodity classification, water supply, fire pumps, and seismic bracing among them. Generic or unrelated training typically won’t qualify, so it’s worth choosing courses built specifically around your discipline.

Logging and audits

You are responsible for keeping records of your CPD activity — course certificates of completion, conference programs, publication records, and anything else that documents the points you’re claiming. NICET can audit a certification at recertification time, so the safest practice is to save your documentation as you go rather than trying to reconstruct three years of activity right before your deadline. A dated certificate of completion that states the contact hours and CPD points earned is exactly the kind of record an audit expects to see.

Deadlines: don’t let the clock run out

Your recertification deadline is tied to the close of your three-year certification period, not to the calendar year. Mark that date somewhere you’ll actually see it, and treat the final few months of the period as a checkpoint, not a starting line. If you’re behind on points heading into the last stretch, focused continuing education is the fastest way to close the gap — a handful of one- and two-hour courses can realistically make up a meaningful shortfall in a weekend.
