Florida Pre-Engineered Systems Exam Day: What to Expect
The numbers
| Questions | 100 scored |
| Time | 120 minutes |
| Pass mark | 70% |
| Exam fee | $44 |
| Book policy | Closed book |
| Calculator | None. That differs from the portable exams, which allow one. |
The Pearson VUE Florida Fire Prevention handbook's permitted references apply to the Contractor exams only. NFPA 17A, 96, 17, 2001 and the 69A-21 rules are what you are tested on, but none of them come into the room.
On the day
- Identification: bring ID that meets the current Pearson VUE handbook's requirements, with a name that matches your application.
- Timing: arrive early, because check-in takes time.
- Belongings: nothing goes in with you, including notes, books and your phone.
Pacing
100 questions in 120 minutes is 72 seconds each, and there's no calculator to lean on.
- Answer everything you know.
- Flag anything that needs thought.
- Come back to the flagged questions.
- Never leave one blank.
Where pre-engineered candidates lose points
- Kitchen intervals and paperwork. The semi-annual service, the inspection report fields and the record-retention period are easy marks, and easy to lose if you only know them from doing the work.
- Shut-offs and actuation. NFPA 96 questions on fuel and electric shut-off and manual actuation come up because they are what makes a kitchen system work.
- Thinking like a designer. The exam tests servicing to the manufacturer's listing. Discharge calculations and design concentrations belong to engineered systems.
- The Florida rules. Part III of 69A-21 is short. Read all of it: service tags, collars, record tags and the inspection report.
