Texas Master Electrician
Practice both portions of the Texas Master Electrician exam the way PSI gives them — NEC Knowledge and Calculations, scored separately, on the 2026 NEC. Service and motor calculations are computed and explained step by step.
Two portions, each scored on its own
You need 70% on each portion — a strong NEC score does not carry a weak calculations score. We give you a full-length practice exam for each.

About the Master Electrician License
Granted by Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR)
Texas's top individual electrician license — the license that supervises journeymen and apprentices.
Eligibility Requirements
A Texas Journeyman Electrician license held for at least two years, and 12,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a Texas-licensed Master Electrician, documented on TDLR's Experience Verification Form.

What the exam covers
Both portions follow PSI's published content outline (bulletin 1682). Unless a question says otherwise, conductors are copper.
- ✓Services, service equipment, fault current, grounding and bonding, transformers
- ✓Branch circuits and conductors — GFCI/AFCI, overcurrent protection, ampacity
- ✓Wiring methods, equipment and devices, working space
- ✓Motors and generators, control and disconnecting means
- ✓Special occupancies — hazardous locations, health care, pools, RV and mobile home parks, marinas, emergency systems
- ✓Renewables — photovoltaics and EV charging
- ✓Calculations — service and feeder loads, transformers, motor circuits and feeders, A/C equipment, voltage drop

- 4 hours — Each renewal needs 4 hours covering the NEC, Texas Electrician Law, TDLR's electrician rules, and NFPA 70E electrical safety.
Reciprocity
Texas reciprocates master licenses with Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio and Tennessee: you must have passed that state's exam, held its license for at least a year, and have 12,000 supervised hours.

Frequently asked questions
How is the Texas Master Electrician exam structured?+
PSI gives it in two portions. NEC Knowledge has 75 items (70 scored) in 150 minutes; Calculations has 33 items (30 scored) in 170 minutes. You need 70% on each portion, and time does not carry over from one to the other.
How is the Master exam different from the Journeyman exam?+
Same format and code, more depth. Master has 100 scored items against Journeyman's 80, and leans much harder on services (11 NEC items and 8 calculations, against 6 and 4) and motors (6 calculations against 2). It also has the lowest pass rates of any Texas electrical exam.
What do I need before I can sit the exam?+
TDLR requires a Texas Journeyman Electrician license held for at least two years and 12,000 hours of on-the-job training under a Texas Master Electrician, documented on its Experience Verification Form. The application is $45; the PSI exam is $78 for both portions.
Which code edition is the exam on?+
Texas state electrical exams use the 2026 NEC from September 1, 2026. Load calculations moved to Article 120, dwelling lighting dropped to 2 VA per square foot, and transformer protection moved to 450.5.
Is the exam open book?+
Yes. You may bring a soft-bound copy of the NEC with the publisher's permanent tabs; homemade tabs and the NEC Handbook are not allowed.
What if I fail one portion?+
Each portion is graded on its own, so you retake only the portion you failed. Our two practice exams mirror that split.
Do I already have access if I bought Journeyman prep?+
No — Master is its own course. The Master practice exams are weighted to the Master outline and include the harder service and motor calculations.
