One exam, 100 questions
You need 70% overall. Calculations sit inside the outline areas rather than in a separate portion, and our full-length practice exam draws from each area in the same proportions.

Frequently asked questions
How is the Oklahoma Unlimited Journeyman Electrician exam structured?+
One PSI exam of 100 questions in 4 hours, open book, and you need 70%. It spreads across 13 areas: six carry 10 questions each — general electrical knowledge, installation requirements, services, feeders and branch circuits, grounding and bonding, special occupancies (including pools), and lighting and signs — and overcurrent protection carries 9.
Which code edition is the exam on?+
The 2023 NEC as adopted by the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission (OUBCC). Oklahoma exam questions moved from the 2020 to the 2023 NEC on December 14, 2024. Where a state code conflicts with a national one, the state code wins, and two Oklahoma amendments change answers: listed HVAC equipment stays exempt from the outdoor-outlet GFCI rule in 210.8(F), with no expiration date, and an added 422.16(B)(5) lets a gas-fired central furnace in a dwelling be cord-and-plug connected with a cord no longer than 9 feet.
Is it open book? What can I bring?+
Yes, with three books: the 2023 NEC (no NEC Handbook and no spiral-bound copies), 29 CFR 1926 (the OSHA construction standards, or PSI's selections from them) and Ugly's Electrical References, any edition. Highlighting, underlining and permanent tabs are allowed; writing in the books and Post-its are not. Bring a silent, non-programmable calculator.
Is there an Oklahoma law section?+
No. Oklahoma law is tested only on the separate Electrical Business and Law exam that contractors take. The Safety area (4 questions) comes from the OSHA construction standards in 29 CFR 1926.
What does it cost, and what if I fail?+
The PSI exam fee is $92 per attempt, and you need 70%. If you fail, you wait 30 days before each retake; no attempt limit is stated. Up to 10 unscored experimental questions may be added, and their time does not count against you.
How often do I renew?+
Every year, by the end of your birth month: $75, or $100 late. You need 12 hours of continuing education every 3 years, 6 of them on the codes OUBCC adopts; you are exempt for the first 3 years after passing your exam.
What do I need before I can sit the exam?+
You must be 18 or older with 8,000 hours (4 years) of electrical construction experience under a journeyman or contractor while employed by a licensed electrical contractor; 4,000 of those hours must be commercial or industrial. Up to 2,000 hours of verified classroom electrical education can count. CIB charges $25 to process the application and $50 for the license.
Can I use a license from another state?+
Oklahoma has journeyman reciprocity agreements with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming. You must have held the license at least a year, obtained it by exam rather than grandfathering, and provide your work history.
