Wisconsin Residential Journeyman Electrician Exam Day: What You Can Bring, the Binder Rule, and Pacing 4 Hours
Exam day for the Wisconsin Residential Journeyman Electrician exam: a DSPS paper site or a Pearson VUE center, one binder with SPS 305, SPS 316 and your notes, the 2023 NEC, up to two bound references, and 100 questions in 4 hours.
Wisconsin Residential Journeyman Electrician Exam Day: What to Expect
Wisconsin's trades exams are run by the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS). The residential journeyman exam is open book, but the rules on what counts as a book are specific, and getting them wrong at the door is the easiest way to lose your references.
Where you test
After you apply through LicensE and pay the fees ($95 to Pearson VUE, $30 to DSPS), you sit the exam either at a DSPS paper-exam site or at a Pearson VUE computer-based testing center in Wisconsin. PSI is not the vendor — if a prep site tells you otherwise, it is out of date.
What you can bring
The exam is open book, and DSPS allows:
- One binder holding SPS 305, SPS 316 and your own printed notes,
- the 2023 NEC codebook or the NEC Handbook,
- up to two bound reference books — for example Ugly's, Ferm's, Tom Henry or Mike Holt.
And the limits:
- Practice exams and previous exams are not allowed as notes, even printed in your binder.
- Tabs only if they came with the book. No sticky notes, and no loose paper.
Bring the 2023 NEC. Wisconsin adopted it effective September 1, 2026, and the exam questions reflect it from October 1, 2026, so a 2017 book will send you to the wrong section numbers.
Building the binder
The binder is where you can help yourself most:
- Put SPS 316 in first and mark, in your notes, which NEC articles each Subchapter IV section changes. For a residential exam, the service changes matter: the 8-foot limit on service raceways inside the building (SPS 316.230 (3) (b)), and NEC 230.85's emergency disconnect not being part of Wisconsin's code (SPS 316.230 (4)).
- Add SPS 305 for the credential rules.
- Keep printed notes to what you will actually look up: the steps of a dwelling load calculation, the 2023 renumbering of the load-calculation tables, and the box-fill and conductor-ampacity steps.
Pacing
100 questions in 4 hours is 2.4 minutes each. That is enough to look some things up, not everything.
- Answer the questions you know first, flag the long lookups and the load calculations, and come back.
- At the two-hour mark you want 50 done.
- Answer every question. You need 70%, so 70 right out of 100.
Before you go
Sit a full-length practice exam with the same books you will bring. Our free practice test gives you 10 questions on the 2023 NEC, and the full exam prep has a timed 100-question practice exam.
