Utah Residential Journeyman Electrician Exam Day: What to Expect
Prov gives Utah's electrician exams for DOPL. The residential journeyman written exam is one combined theory and code test, and there is a separate hands-on practical. Here is what the day looks like.
Where you test
The written exam is given at Prov's fixed sites in Layton, Provo, Sandy and St. George, or remotely through Prov's Examroom with webcam proctoring. The practical is in person.
Scheduling
- On Prov's scheduler (scheduler.provexam.com), choose "UT Electrical" and the Residential Journeyman license, and enter your details exactly as on your ID.
- Your registration goes to your training school for approval, required for first-time candidates from January 1, 2026.
- Once approved, log back in, pick a date and venue, and pay by card. Phone scheduling is (801) 733-4455.
Cancel or reschedule at least 3 business days ahead, or the fee is forfeited. A no-show forfeits it too.
What to bring
A current government-issued photo ID whose name matches your registration exactly. A temporary paper Utah license only counts together with the expired original.
Open book, with rules
You may use the reference books: the 2023 NEC, Ugly's Electrical References (2023) and the listed Utah laws and rules. Prov permits both the current and the previous edition of the code book.
- Permanent tabs, highlighting and underlining are allowed.
- Repositionable tabs and sticky notes are not.
- No handwritten notes and no added pages: no formula sheets, printed tab indexes or Ohm's law stickers.
- No marking your books during the exam.
No references are allowed at the practical.
Calculator
Only Prov's on-screen calculator is allowed. Try the practice version at testconsole.provexam.com before your exam.
The questions
100 multiple-choice questions, four options each, in 240 minutes. There is no penalty for guessing, and you can flag and review questions.
Pacing
That is 2.4 minutes per question.
- Roughly a third of the outline is theory: current, power, resistance, voltage and voltage drop. Work those from memory and save lookup time for code questions.
- Have Articles 250, 680 and 690 tabbed. Grounding is the largest area, and pools, PV and wind is the area unique to this exam.
- Flag and move on when a lookup runs long.
- Answer every question. A guess costs nothing.
- Halfway check: about 50 done at 2 hours.
The practical
The Utah Residential Electrician Practical is four tasks in 95 minutes: setting torque, wiring an evaporative-cooler motor from a schematic, three-way and four-way switching, and wiring from a schematic. Practical results take up to 15 days.
Scoring
The written exam is scored against a 75% cut score, and you get the result on site. Each exam is scored separately.
If you do not pass
Wait 30 days and retake; the written exam is $85 per attempt. After six failed attempts, the wait is 120 days before each further attempt. Current pass rates are not published.
