Utah Journeyman Electrician Exam Day: What to Expect
Prov gives Utah's electrician exams for DOPL. The journeyman written exam is one combined theory and code test. Here is what the day looks like.
Where you test
Prov runs fixed test sites in Layton, Provo, Sandy and St. George, and also offers the written exam remotely through Prov's Examroom, proctored by webcam. The practical exam is a separate, in-person appointment.
Scheduling
- Register on Prov's scheduler (scheduler.provexam.com), choose "UT Electrical" as the certifying body and Journeyman as the license, and enter your details exactly as they appear on your ID.
- Your registration goes to your training school for approval. Prov requires this for first-time journeyman candidates from January 1, 2026.
- Once approved, log back in, pick a date and site, and pay by card. You can also schedule by phone at (801) 733-4455.
To cancel or reschedule, give at least 3 business days' notice. Later than that, or a no-show, and you forfeit the fee.
What to bring
A current government-issued photo ID, with a name that matches your registration exactly. A temporary paper Utah license is accepted only with the expired original.
Open book, with rules
The exam is open book. The references are the 2023 NEC, Ugly's Electrical References (2023) and the Utah laws and rules the bulletin lists. Prov permits both the current and the previous edition of the code book.
How you may prepare your books:
- Permanent tabs are allowed.
- Highlighting and underlining in pen or highlighter are allowed.
- Repositionable tabs and sticky notes are not.
- No handwritten notes, and no added pages: formula sheets, printed tab indexes and stickers such as Ohm's law decals are all out.
- You may not mark your books during the exam.
Calculator
You may use only Prov's on-screen calculator. No other calculator is permitted. Prov has a practice version online at testconsole.provexam.com; use it before exam day so you are not learning it under the clock.
The questions
100 multiple-choice questions with four options each, in 240 minutes. There is no penalty for guessing, and you can flag questions and come back to them.
Pacing
That is 2.4 minutes per question.
- About 30 questions are theory: current, resistance, voltage, voltage drop and power. Work them from what you know and keep your Code-lookup time for the code questions.
- Know your tabs. Article 250 alone carries 10 questions; finding it should take seconds.
- Do not let one lookup eat your time. Answer, flag it, and come back.
- Answer every question. A blank is always wrong, and a guess costs nothing.
- Check the clock at the halfway mark: about 50 done at 2 hours.
Scoring
You need 75%. Written results are given on site when you finish. Practical results take up to 15 days.
If you do not pass
You can retake after 30 days, and each attempt is $85. After six failed attempts, you wait 120 days before each further attempt. DOPL and Prov do not publish pass rates for the current exam.
