Texas TFM-03 Test Day: What to Expect at PSI
The basics
| Vendor | PSI |
| Test | TFM-03 Type K |
| Questions | 50 |
| Pass mark | 70% |
| Book policy | Closed book |
PSI sets the time limit. Check your PSI confirmation and candidate bulletin before test day.
Before you can sit it
You need a Type B licence (FEL-B), or an apprentice permit held for at least 6 months. The Type K licence also requires TFM-01 Statutes & Rules and TFM-02 on portables, unless you already passed them for Type B.
What to bring
- ID: identification that meets PSI's requirements, with a name matching your application.
- Nothing else: NFPA 17A, 96 and 10 are what you are tested on, but they stay outside.
Pacing
Fifty questions is short. True/false items often turn on one word ("all", "only", "never"), so read every question to the end.
Retakes
Under 28 TAC §34.516(c), an examinee who fails a topic files a retest application with the required fee.
Where technicians lose points
- Frequencies. Semi-annual service, inspection intervals and cleaning frequencies are exact numbers. Closed book, they are recall or nothing.
- Shut-offs and actuation. What must shut down when the system discharges, and where the manual pull station goes.
- Treating the hood as someone else's problem. NFPA 96 questions cover hood and duct conditions that stop the extinguishing system working.
- Fire classes. Class K and how it differs from Class B.
Practise under the same rules
Closed book, 50 questions. Our Texas practice exams run TFM-01, TFM-02 and TFM-03 separately, the way PSI does. Start with the free practice test.
