Texas Fire Extinguisher Test Day: TFM-01 and TFM-02 at PSI
The basics
| Vendor | PSI |
| Tests | TFM-01 Statutes & Rules, TFM-02 Type B |
| Questions | 50 each |
| Pass mark | 70% on each |
| Book policy | Closed book |
The time limit is set by PSI. Check your PSI confirmation and candidate bulletin before test day rather than relying on a figure from a forum.
Closed book means closed book
You are tested on NFPA 10, Insurance Code Chapter 6001 and 28 TAC 34 Subchapter E, but none of them come in with you. Budget your study for recall:
- the numbers;
- the intervals;
- the tag rules.
What to bring
- Identification meeting PSI's requirements, with a name that matches your application.
- Nothing else. Personal items stay outside the testing room.
Pacing
Fifty questions is short. Read each question fully: true/false items in particular turn on a single word ("all", "only", "never").
A workable rhythm:
- Answer everything you know.
- Flag the rest.
- Come back to the flagged questions.
- Never leave one blank.
Retakes
28 TAC §34.516(c): an examinee who fails a topic files a retest application with the required fee. Each test is scored on its own, so passing TFM-02 and failing TFM-01 means you retake TFM-01 only.
Where technicians lose points
- Treating TFM-01 as easy. It is all statute and rule, not equipment. People who service extinguishers every day still miss the fee, timing and service-tag questions because they never read Subchapter E.
- Edition drift on TFM-02. Texas adopts NFPA 10-2018. If you learned on 2022, check the requirements that changed, starting with the AFFF/FFFP premix replacement interval.
- License scope. Know which license type covers kitchen systems, which covers fixed systems, and what Type B allows, including low-pressure hydrostatic testing of portables.
Practice under the same rules
Closed book, timed, 50 questions per test. Our Texas practice exams run TFM-01 and TFM-02 separately, the way PSI does. Start with the free practice test.
