NFPA 13 (2022) — the bulk of the exam

Chapter 4 — General Requirements. Hazard classifications (Light, OH-1, OH-2, EH-1, EH-2), water-supply requirements, and basic occupancy rules. Easy points if you've memorized the classification table.

Chapter 8 — System Requirements. System types (wet, dry, preaction, deluge), zoning rules, valve placement, FDC requirements. Closed-book candidates trip on the dry-system 60-second water-delivery rule and preaction interlock definitions.

Chapter 11 — Installation Requirements. Hangers, bracing, seismic, sprinkler position and obstruction rules, the 4-times-the-obstruction-dimension rule and its exceptions. This is the chapter where memorization pays off most directly.

Chapter 23 — Plans and Calculations. Density/area method, the hydraulic design curve, hose-stream allowance. Numerical questions are common here.

Chapter 27 — System Acceptance. Hydrostatic test pressure (200 psi, or 50 psi above max system pressure if higher), air-test for dry, contractor's material and test certificate. OFC §918 and OBC Ch. 9

These are the short-form Ohio-specific references — and the ones candidates most commonly under-prepare for.

OFC §918 (OAC 1301:7-7-09) is administrative: company association requirements, certification categories, reciprocity rules, the SFM's authority to revoke. You'll see a handful of questions here that aren't difficult if you've read the section but are nearly impossible if you haven't.

OBC Chapter 9 is the Ohio Building Code's fire-protection chapter — occupancy thresholds where sprinklers are required, standpipe height triggers, and where NFPA 13R is permitted versus where NFPA 13 is required. There's no way to reason this from first principles; you either know the thresholds or you don't.
