What's on the Minnesota Master Electrician Exam? Topics, Difficulty, and How It Differs From Journeyworker
The Minnesota Class A Master exam: 80 harder questions on the 2026 NEC and Minnesota laws — services and feeders, grounding, special occupancies, motors and load calculations — and how to study for it.
What's on the Minnesota Master Electrician Exam?
The master exam has the same shape as the journeyworker exam — 80 questions, 5½ hours, 70% to pass, on the 2026 NEC — and DLI lists almost the same knowledge areas for both. The difference is difficulty: DLI rates master questions 2.5 to 3.5 on average out of 5, against 1.5 to 2.5 for journeyworker. Like the journeyworker exam, DLI does not publish how many questions come from each area.
What "harder" means
DLI's guide says the most difficult questions are the ones that apply several code rules at once or need multiple or complex calculations. On the master exam, expect more of those:
- Service and feeder load calculations — dwellings, multifamily, non-dwellings and farms, now in Article 120 of the 2026 NEC, with the neutral load.
- Motor circuits — feeder conductors and protection for several motors (DLI's own sample question asks for the XHHW-2 feeder size for three 460-volt motors).
- Overcurrent protection over 800 amperes, tap rules, ground-fault protection of equipment.
- Grounding separately derived systems, two buildings on one service, bonding over 250 volts.
- Special occupancies and systems — hazardous locations, health care, emergency and standby systems.
The 2026 NEC changes to watch
- Load calculations: Article 220 → Article 120; dwelling lighting 3 → 2 VA/ft²; optional dwelling method first 10 kVA → first 8 kVA at 100%
- Transformer overcurrent protection: 450.3 → 450.5
- Motor branch-circuit protection table: Table 430.52 → Table 430.52(C)(1)
Minnesota laws and rules
The Laws and Rules Booklet — the Minnesota Electrical Act and Rules 3800 and 3801 — is on the table at the exam. It covers licensing classes and supervision, the responsible licensed person, permits and inspection. Read it once before exam day so you know where things are.
A study plan
- Load calculations until they are automatic. Work Annex D's examples on the 2026 numbering.
- Motors and overcurrent protection — Article 430's tables and the tap rules.
- Grounding and bonding, including separately derived systems.
- Practice without tabs. DLI's NEC has none.
- Take a timed 80-question exam before the real one.
Our free practice test gives you 10 questions on the 2026 NEC with every calculation worked out. The full exam prep has an 80-question practice exam built on our own blueprint, weighted toward these areas.
