The ICC CF — Commercial Fire Sprinkler Inspector certification is for the person verifying that an installed water-based system matches the approved design and the standards — at acceptance, and on the periodic inspections that follow.
There is no experience requirement to sit it. There is, however, a book bill, and it is the largest in the ICC fire family.
There is no experience requirement
ICC does not publish an experience or education prerequisite for CF. No documented hours, no supervisor sign-off, no prerequisite certification.
Compare that with the NICET water-based route, where documented work experience gates the higher levels, and the appeal is obvious: an inspector with real field time but no formal credential can hold one immediately.
The honest caveat is the same as for every ICC certification — because it does not certify experience, some jurisdictions treat it as one element of competency rather than the whole. Confirm what your AHJ or employer requires.
What the credential covers
CF is an inspection credential, and its scope is wider than the name suggests. Sprinklers themselves are only 8% of the exam:

Add water source, standpipes, fire pumps and fire department connections together and you get 40% of the exam — everything upstream of the sprinkler outweighs the sprinkler nearly five to one. The full weighting is here.
The book bill
This is the practical barrier to CF, not eligibility. The exam draws on as many as six NFPA standards plus the IFC:

Confirm the approved reference list and — critically — the edition years on the CF page in the ICC Exam Catalog before buying a single book. ICC's edition years deliberately lag the current published standards, and NFPA 13 in particular was restructured between recent editions.
If you already own a working set from field practice, check the spines against the catalog list. Buying the wrong editions is the most expensive avoidable mistake on this exam.
CF or CP?
ICC issues two commercial sprinkler credentials and they are different jobs:

Neither requires the other. If you inspect, take CF. If you review drawings, CP is the one — and it is a substantially more mathematical exam.
What it costs
ICC's own reporting puts its fire alarm and fire sprinkler certification exams at $199, with a member discount. Confirm the live figure on the CF page in the Exam Catalog.
How to apply
- Create a myICC account at iccsafe.org.
- Find CF in the Exam Catalog; confirm approved references and edition years.
- Purchase the exam.
- Schedule through ICC PRONTO remote proctoring or a Pearson VUE test centre.
There is no application review. Registration is a purchase.
If you do not pass
Six attempts within a six-month period, fee payable each time. Exhaust all six and you wait six months from your first attempt.
Renewal
Three-year cycle through myICC, on CEUs:

At least half must come from ICC training or a Preferred Provider, and ICC audits renewals monthly. If you add CP later, the pair renews on 6.0 CEUs total rather than 3.0 each.
