Arkansas Residential Journeyman Exam Day: Prov, 40 Questions, and 2 Hours
What to expect on the Arkansas residential journeyman electrician exam with Prov: test center or remote, the 2023 NEC as your open-book reference and how you may tab it, the calculator question, 28 of 40 to pass, and the retake rules.
Arkansas Residential Journeyman Electrician Exam Day: What to Expect
The residential journeyman exam is the shortest of the four Arkansas electrician exams: 40 questions in 2 hours. Prov gives it for the Board of Electrical Examiners. Here is what the day looks like.
Booking
Once the Board approves you (approval lasts 183 days):
- Go to provexam.com/scheduler and choose "New Test-Taker".
- Pick "AR - Arkansas Department of Labor - Electrical Examining Board" and the residential journeyman license. Make sure it is the residential exam, not the journeyman one; they are different exams.
- Enter your details (including your SSN), choose a date, time and site, and pay $80 by card. Phone booking: (801) 733-4455.
Cancel or reschedule at least 3 days ahead or you forfeit the fee.
Where
- One of 10 Prov test centers in Arkansas, or any Prov center in the US.
- Or remotely, through Examroom.ai.
The book
Open book, with one listed reference: the 2023 NEC (NFPA 70).
- Highlight and underline all you like beforehand. No marking during the exam.
- Permanent tabs only. No movable tabs or Post-its.
- No handwritten notes, formula sheets, Tom Henry or Kelly indexes, or added stickers.
- Photocopies only where the bulletin allows, and the book title must be exact.
Prov says older and newer editions are "always permitted", but the questions are keyed to 2023. If your book is a 2020 or a 2026, some answers will sit in different places or say different things.
Because 18 of the 40 items come from Chapter 2, spend your tabbing effort there: Articles 210, 220, 230, 240 and 250.
Calculator
The bulletin does not mention calculators. It prohibits "any other electronic devices" and does not describe an on-screen calculator. General theory is 5 items, and dwelling load calculations live in Chapter 2. Ask Prov before test day whether you can use or will be given a calculator.
The clock
40 questions, 120 minutes: 3 minutes each.
- Theory items (5) cannot be looked up. Answer them from memory and save the time for the book.
- Chapter 2 lookups should be fast if your tabs are good.
- Answer everything. Questions are four-option multiple choice with no penalty for guessing.
- Halfway check: about 20 done at 1 hour.
Scoring
70% to pass, which is 28 of 40 if it is a straight percentage; the bulletin does not say whether scores are raw or scaled, or whether any items are unscored. Results are immediate and are sent to the Board. There is no law section.
If you do not pass
- Retest after 2 days, with a new fee each attempt.
- Prov allows unlimited attempts within one approval.
- Under the Board's rules, an applicant who did not complete an apprenticeship may be required to complete up to two years of one before retesting.
After you pass
Get the license within 6 months after the end of the month you tested, or you will be retesting. It is $25 a year, and it is good in Arkansas only: the residential license does not reciprocate.
