Frequently asked questions
How is the ICC Residential Electrician exam structured?+
ICC exam R18: 60 questions in 3 hours, open book, and you need 70%. It covers dwelling wiring only, so there are no motor or control-device areas. Branch circuits and conductors (25%, about 15 questions) and services (22%, about 13) carry the most weight.
Who accepts the ICC Residential Electrician exam?+
ICC is not a licensing agency: each city, county or state decides which exam it accepts, and at which code edition. Some cities that license residential electricians accept ICC's residential certification in place of their own testing; Naperville, Illinois, for example, accepts it for registration. Check with your jurisdiction before you book.
Is it open book?+
Yes. The references are the 2023 NEC and Ugly's Electrical Reference (any edition), and ICC allows any bound, copyrighted book at the test site. Know where the rules live: the exam rewards finding a section quickly as much as knowing it.
Where do I take it, and what does it cost?+
ICC gives the exams at Pearson VUE test centers for $120. After a failed attempt you wait 10 days before you can retest.
What do I need before I can sit the exam?+
ICC sets no experience requirement for the exam itself. The jurisdiction that issues your license sets its own experience, application and renewal rules, so confirm them with your city or county.
