You need 70% overall, so a strong area can carry a weaker one. Calculations are one area of the exam, and our full-length practice exam draws from every area in the same proportions.

On the 2023 NEC — not the 2020 or the 2026
Prov's bulletin keys every Arkansas electrician exam to the 2023 NEC, even though the Board's rules adopted the 2020 edition before and adopt the 2026 edition now. Study material written for the 2020 NEC numbers these rules differently. Every question here cites the 2023 section.

Frequently asked questions
How is the Arkansas Master Electrician exam structured?+
One Prov exam of 60 questions in 3 hours, open book, and you need 70%. Grounding and bonding and services, feeders and overcurrent protection are 10 questions each, a third of the exam, while general knowledge and calculations drops to 5 — fewer than on the journeyman exam.
Which code edition is the exam on?+
The 2023 NEC. Prov's bulletin lists NFPA 70, 2023 edition, as the only reference for every Arkansas electrician exam. That is not the code Arkansas enforces: the Board's rules adopted the 2020 NEC before and now adopt the 2026 edition. Prov has not announced a date to move the exams, so every question here is keyed to the 2023 NEC.
Is it open book? What can I bring?+
Yes. The NEC is the only listed reference. Prov allows older and newer editions in the room, but the answers are keyed to 2023. Permanent tabs, highlighting and underlining are allowed; movable tabs, Post-its, handwritten notes, formula sheets and added indexes such as Tom Henry or Kelly are not.
Is there an Arkansas law section?+
No. None of the four Arkansas outlines has a law or rules area, and no statute or rule book is on the reference list. Every question is on the NEC, safety, theory or calculations.
Who gives the exam, and what if I fail?+
Prov, at its test centers in Arkansas or anywhere in the US, or remotely through Examroom.ai. The exam fee is $80, and you need 70%. If you fail, you can retest after 2 days, with no limit on attempts during your 183-day approval. The Board may require a candidate who did not complete an apprenticeship to finish up to two years of one before retesting.
How often do I renew?+
Every year: $25 for a journeyman or residential journeyman license, $50 for a master or residential master. You need 8 hours of Board-approved continuing education each NEC code cycle, completed in the first year of the cycle.
What do I need before I can sit the exam?+
Any one of: an electrical engineering degree plus 2 years of construction experience; 6 years in residential and commercial construction, including 2 years as a licensed journeyman; or an equivalent combination the Board approves. The license fee is $50.
