Texas Journeyman Electrician
Practice both portions of the Texas Journeyman Electrician exam the way PSI gives them — NEC Knowledge and Calculations, scored separately, on the 2026 NEC. Every calculation is computed and explained step by step.
Two portions, each scored on its own
You need 70% on each portion — a strong NEC score does not carry a weak calculations score. We give you a full-length practice exam for each.

What the exam covers
Both portions follow PSI's published content outline (bulletin 1682). Unless a question says otherwise, conductors are copper.
- ✓Branch circuits and conductors — GFCI/AFCI, overcurrent protection, ampacity
- ✓Wiring methods — raceways, boxes, cabinets, cables, underground
- ✓Equipment and devices — receptacles, luminaires, A/C and heating, appliances, working space
- ✓Services, grounding and bonding, transformers, temporary wiring
- ✓Feeders, motors and generators, control and disconnecting means
- ✓Special occupancies — pools, RV and mobile home parks, marinas, emergency systems
- ✓Renewables — photovoltaics and EV charging
- ✓Calculations — dwelling and feeder loads, motor and A/C circuits, box and conduit fill, voltage drop

Frequently asked questions
How is the Texas Journeyman Electrician exam structured?+
PSI gives it in two portions. NEC Knowledge has 59 items (56 scored) in 130 minutes; Calculations has 26 items (24 scored) in 110 minutes. You need 70% on each portion, and time does not carry over from one to the other.
Which code edition is the exam on?+
Texas state electrical exams use the 2026 NEC from September 1, 2026. Prep material written for the 2023 NEC teaches numbers that changed — dwelling lighting at 2 VA per square foot, the optional method's first 8 kVA, load calculations in Article 120.
Is the exam open book?+
Yes. You may bring a soft-bound copy of the NEC. The skill being tested is finding the right section quickly, which is why every answer here cites the section it comes from.
What do I need before I can sit the exam?+
TDLR requires 7,000 hours of on-the-job training under a Texas-licensed Master Electrician, documented on its Experience Verification Form, and a $30 application. Once approved you schedule with PSI; the exam fee is $78 for both portions.
What if I fail one portion?+
Each portion is graded on its own, so you retake only the portion you failed. Our two practice exams mirror that split, so you can drill the one you need.
How are the calculation questions checked?+
Every calculation answer — and every wrong option — is computed by code from the NEC tables and rules, not written by hand. The explanation walks through each step with the section it comes from.
Are all conductors copper?+
On the PSI exam, yes, unless a question says otherwise. Our questions follow the same convention.
