Frequently asked questions
How is the Kentucky Journeyman Electrician exam structured?+
ICC exam 703_KY: 80 questions in 4 hours, open book, and you need 70%. It follows the national ICC journeyman outline; wiring methods (about 21 questions) and branch circuits and conductors (about 15) carry the most weight.
Which code edition is the exam on?+
The 2023 NEC. ICC gives the Kentucky exams on the 2023 edition, the code Kentucky has enforced since January 1, 2025. Kentucky had been on the 2017 NEC, so older study material numbers several load-calculation rules differently.
Is it open book?+
Yes. The references are the 2023 NEC and Ugly's Electrical Reference (any edition). Know where the rules live: the exam rewards finding a section quickly as much as knowing it.
Who gives the exam, and are there other options?+
ICC gives the Kentucky Standard exams at Pearson VUE test centers for $100. You need 70% to pass, and you must wait 10 days after a failed attempt. Kentucky also accepts passing exams from PROV and NASCLA; our practice exams follow the ICC outline.
How often do I renew?+
Every two years, by the end of your birth month: $100 for an electrician license, $200 for a master. Kentucky requires 6 hours of continuing education a year, on safety, electrical codes or trade subjects, with no more than 2 hours of safety.
Can I use a license from another state?+
Kentucky has agreements with West Virginia and Virginia (master and journeyman licenses) and with Ohio (an Ohio electrical contractor license earns a Kentucky contractor and master license).
What do I need before I can sit the exam?+
For the Kentucky electrician license: 8,000 hours of verifiable electrical experience. Any one of an approved training course or apprenticeship, two years of a four-year approved program, an associate degree in electrical technology, or two years teaching electrical technology counts for 4,000 of those hours. The license fee is $100.
