One exam, 100 questions
You need 70% overall. Calculations sit inside the outline areas rather than in a separate portion, and our full-length practice exam draws from each area in the same proportions.

The 2020 or the 2023 NEC — your choice of book
PSI lets you bring either the 2020 or the 2023 NEC. Our questions stick to rules that read the same in both and cite the 2023 section. If you bring the 2020 book, these rules sit under different numbers.

Frequently asked questions
How is the Idaho Master Electrician exam structured?+
One PSI exam of 100 questions in 4½ hours, open book, and you need 75% — more than the journeyman exam’s 70%. It follows the journeyman outline with slightly different weights and adds a communication systems area (3 questions).
Which code edition is the exam on?+
Either the 2020 or the 2023 NEC — PSI lets you bring either book, along with the 2023 Ugly's Electrical References. Idaho has enforced the 2023 NEC, with Idaho amendments, since April 19, 2024, but the bulletin says code questions use only the listed NEC editions, and no outline area covers the Idaho amendments. Our questions stick to rules that read the same in both editions and leave out the sections Idaho amends.
Is it open book? What can I bring?+
Yes. Bring the 2020 or 2023 NEC and the 2023 Ugly's. Ferm's Fast Finder Index and the Tom Henry Key Word Index (2020 or 2023) are also allowed, though the exam was not developed from them. Highlighting, underlining and permanent indexing must be done before the exam, with no writing during it. A silent, non-printing, non-programmable calculator is allowed.
Who gives the exam, and what does it cost?+
PSI, for the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL). The Idaho-specific journeyman and master exams, written with PSI, went live December 1, 2025; DOPL no longer offers the NASCLA exams, though it still accepts passing NASCLA scores. The fee is $75 per attempt, and you may retake the exam as many times as you need.
Is there an Idaho law section?+
No. Neither outline has a law or rules area, and no Idaho rules are on the reference list.
How often do I renew?+
Every three years, on your birthday, for $45. Idaho currently requires no continuing education for electricians: the 2025 Legislature removed the requirement from the rules.
What do I need before I can sit the exam?+
At least four years working as a licensed journeyman electrician. A master license costs $65 and includes a journeyman license at no extra cost.
