The NICET ITFAS exam at a glance

The NICET Inspection & Testing of Fire Alarm Systems (ITFAS) exam is the credential for technicians whose primary work is inspecting, testing, and maintaining fire alarm systems — as opposed to designing or installing them. Current format pulled from the official NICET ITFAS program page:

LevelQuestionsTimeFee
I85110 min$230
II80110 min$315

Both levels are computer-based at Pearson VUE centers. Recertification is required every 3 years via CPD.

What's actually on the exam

The ITFAS exam draws primarily from NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code). The four chapters that do most of the heavy lifting:

NFPA 72 Chapter 3 — Definitions

Terminology questions. The exam is careful about the difference between an inspection, a test, and maintenance — these have specific meanings in NFPA 72 and a lot of Level I questions hinge on the distinction.

NFPA 72 Chapter 7 — Documentation

How as-built records are stored, what goes in service records, who retains them and for how long. Chapter 7 also covers documentation requirements for existing system acceptance and reacceptance.

NFPA 72 Chapter 10 — Fundamentals

System supervision, signaling paths, power requirements, and the general operational requirements inspectors need to understand to know what "normal" looks like before they can identify abnormalities.

NFPA 72 Chapter 14 — Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance

The big one. This is where the frequency tables live (how often specific device types must be inspected, tested, maintained). Table 14.4.5 alone generates a meaningful percentage of exam questions — know how to navigate it blindfolded.

Beyond NFPA 72, candidates may see scattered questions referencing:

Always verify the current allowed editions via NICET's ITFAS Level I reference list before your exam date.

Why time pressure matters

At 85 questions in 110 minutes on Level I (80 questions in 110 minutes on Level II), you have about 1 minute 18 seconds per question. That's not enough time to casually flip through NFPA 72 for every question. The candidates who pass are the ones who've built muscle memory for:

The only way to build that speed is practice tests taken under timed conditions with your codebook in hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between NICET Fire Alarm Systems (FAS) and NICET ITFAS? FAS focuses on designing, installing, and wiring fire alarm systems. ITFAS focuses on inspecting, testing, and maintaining systems that already exist. The exam content differs significantly — FAS goes deep on NFPA 70 Article 760 (wiring) and NFPA 72 installation chapters, while ITFAS centers on NFPA 72 Chapters 3, 7, 10, and 14.

How many questions are on the NICET ITFAS exam? Level I: 85 questions in 110 minutes. Level II: 80 questions in 110 minutes.

Which NFPA 72 chapters are most important for ITFAS? Chapters 3 (Definitions), 7 (Documentation), 10 (Fundamentals), and 14 (Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance). Chapter 14 and the frequency tables in it carry a disproportionate share of the exam.

Do I need to know OSHA for the NICET ITFAS exam? A handful of questions may reference OSHA (primarily worker safety during testing). It's not a primary focus, but don't be surprised to see a few OSHA questions.

What experience do I need before NICET ITFAS Level I? 6 months of documented fire alarm experience (inspection, testing, or service work). Verify the current requirement in the NICET ITFAS candidate handbook.

How much does the NICET ITFAS exam cost? Level I is $230. Level II is $315.
